Sibusisiwe Business Training Centre

The economic development and personal mastery programs are joint programs that aim to address the holistic development of the individual: socially & emotionally as well as the development of money and business management skills. We have run this "dual" program with a number of small groups from the Nyanga & Khayalitsha communities under the banner of Sibusisiwe Skills Development. The primary goal of the program is to teach unemployed individuals with limited resources & skills, the basic principles of business and character skills that in turn will put them in a better position to provide for the basic needs of their families.

For the business and money management skills training, we are currently using the Business Matters Course under the auspices of Crown ministries together with Strong Message and the accredited Micro MBA program. The character skills portion of this program has been developed by Sibusisiwe and forms part of our Personal Mastery pillar. It focuses on the holistic development of the individual's social and emotional skills.

The target market for this program are those individuals who want to start their own business, but do not know how or where to start or those who have already started but are unsure how to develop it further.

Pat Khumalo is our trainer and being from the Khayalitsha community, she understands firsthand the underlying needs and the daily challenges the clients face. She is a teacher by trade and hence has the natural ability to translate unfamiliar concepts into practical tools and examples.

We started off last year with a grant from the Department of Social Development which enabled us to carry through 3 groups of students. However we are currently in desperate need of funding in order to continue the good work in those communities. Ideally we also want to extend and grow this project into other communities, e.g. the poorer communities in the Western Cape.
